The identities Herman Fisher and Irving Price, together with Price’s illustrator-artist wife Margaret Evans Price, and Helen Schelle, launched the company in 1930 amid the height of the Great Depression. The name Fisher-Price was created by merging Herman Fisher and Irving Price. Prior to that, Fisher was employed by a corporation in Churchville, New York, where he was responsible for the production, marketing, and advertising of games. Helen Schelle had formerly managed the Penny Walker Toy Shop in Binghamton, New York, while Price had previously worked for a prominent chain of variety stores before retiring. The main tenets of Fisher-toy Price’s manufacturing philosophy concentrated on action, innovation, sturdy construction, excellent value for the money, and toys’ inherent potential for play value. The first toys were constructed from hefty steel pieces and ponderosa wood, both of which were chosen because of their resistance to splintering and their ability to withstand severe usage. Colorful lithographic labels were used to provide both features and appeal to the product. Mrs. Price served as the company’s first Art Director and was responsible for designing the push-pull toys that were sold in the inaugural line. Her designs were inspired by the characters in her children’s novels.
